I live in the US and my husband lives in Quebec, Canada, how do I divorce him and get legal custody of my son?

We haven’t seen one another for 5 years but we have a child in common. My husband was also just released from prison.

You start by filing a divorce or suit to dissolve the marriage where you live.  You may have some issues getting him served with notice of the suit considering his status and that he lives in a different country, but it's not impossible.  You may have to use alternative methods of service. If you cannot afford an attorney help you with the whole divorce, at least considering hiring a family law attorney with international experience to help you get your husband served with notice of the suit.
