My lease was over 2 months ago. I am not sure if that means anything.

If you do not pay your rent when it is due, you can be evicted--that's so even if your tried to pay but the check bounced. Of course, the landlord can't simply lock you out; they have to go through the courts to evict you, which will typically take 3 - 6 weeks, and if you can pay all rent due before you are actually evicted, then you should be able to stay.
The fact that your lease expired most likely means you are now a month to month tenant, under the same terms as the lease (other than as to duration or length), at least until the landlord gives you a month's notice that either he is proposing new terms (including changing the rent) or terminating your tenancy.
