Whenever you find something laying around, you can potentially keep it... but know that there are risks associated with selling something that you have found that has a potentially identifiable owner. If you do sell it and the ring ended up being stolen, then someone could accuse you of being the actor that stole the ring. The better avenue would be to report the ring to the police, see if they can find the owner, and if they cannot, then ask for the return of the ring so that you can sell it at that point. It seems like a lot of work to go through this route, but it is easier and cheaper than facing a potential criminal charge down the road. The charge may not stick, but even the cost of posting bail could eat up any potential profit you might get from the sale of the ring.
