If I filed my own bankruptcy but the following day a garnishment was placed on my paycheck, what steps do I take to get this removed?

You need to send the creditor or collections agent (or law firm) a copy of the filing with a letter stating that you have filed for bankruptcy and all collection efforts are therefore stayed; copy your employer (e.g. the payroll or HR dept.) on the letter as well. If that doesn't work, contact the bankruptcy court, explain the situation to the clerk (that even though you filed, there is a garnishment) and ask for instructions.
