How to find deceased parent 401k

My adoptive father passed away not too long ago, he had a 401k but I do not know
how to go about finding it. Where would I start. Please advise

There is no central repository or filing place for this information, so there is no easy way to find it. You need to look through his papers and his files, to see if there are any statements from the account, memos about the account, etc. Don't forget to look in a safe deposit box, if he had one. If had an accountant or tax preparer, ask that person--they may know. See if you can't contact his employer. Etc. All you can do is play detective--there is no easy way to do this.
