My boss has a note on the schedule and it says
that if we call in the same day we will be
suspended for one week, I wonder if this is legal

Do you have a union agreement or employment contract that addresses this situation? If not, then you are an "at will" worker. This means that your company can set the conditions of employment much as it sees fit (absent some form of legally actionable discrimination). Accordingly, your employer can suoend you (or your co-workers) for as long as it deems appropriate.
