The law does not generally provide any guidance on this--it's subject to the agreement between the company and client/customer--other than to say that in your state, a contract (whether written or oral) to do work, provide services or materials, etc. can only be enforced for up to 4 years; so if the customer is not invoiced for 4 years, it will be too late to require him/her to pay.
