How do I get power of attorney to pay my dad’s bills while he is in the hospital?

I will have his consent, however he lives in one state and I live in another.

He can execute (sign) a Power of Attorney in front of witnesses and have it notarized, then send you a copy (better yet, he should sign multiple originals and send you one of the originals). Easiest way to do this is to hire a local (to your father) attorney to draw up the POA, come to the hospital with witnesses, and get it signed by your father.
