How can I get my first offense petty theft charges reduced to an infraction?

The item I shoplifted was worth $40 and I read that items less than $50 can get your charges reduced, but I was wondering if I needed an attorney to do so? Because I don’t have the money to spend on a lawyer right now, so how can I do this on my own?

Since the value of the goods was under $50, the prosecuting attorney may agree to a reduction of the charge to an infraction. It would be better for you to have legal counsel here since this is right now a criminal charge. However, it that's not possible you can try to negotiate the plea down you can speak yourself with the prosecutor when you go to court. The fact that this is your first offense will be critical. Also, if you pay restitution to the store that you stole from before going to court (if any restituton is in fact owed) that would be a good idea - just be sure to let the court know that you have done so.
