How can I be denied unemployment for something out of my control?

Husband and wife management team. Random audit by area manager on a Friday revealed that there was money missing from petty cash that I was completely unaware of. I was totally blindsided and had never been short on any funds the entire 3.5 years I worked there. Then spouse explained that he had borrowed it and would have the money back by Monday, which it was. They have denied his unemployment but why or how can they deny mine?

They are denying your because they believe you collaborated with or assisted your husband in taking the money, or at least helped over it up. That is not an unreasonable assumption given that you are a husband and wife management team. Only if you can on appeal convince unemployment that you were completely uninvolved would you get unemployment, and that, frankly, may be very difficult to do.
