If I’m 26 years old and have, among othr debt, $10,000 in past due student loans will bankruptcy help me?

I’ve been thinking of declaring bankruptcy in an order to rebuild my credit from scratch but I heard that college loans don’t go away through this method. Does that mean that the bad credit from the college loans will follow me after the bankruptcy and ruin my credit immediately? What if I start paying the school loans after the bankruptcy, will that ensure a clean slate?

Under federal bankruptcy laws student loan debt is not dischargeable. However, you might be able to reorganize the payment timing on your own with your lenders or in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy filing. Given what you have written, I suggest that you consult with an attorney that practices bankruptcy protection and consumer law.
