If I had a verbal agreement with an employer that was supposed to last for at least 1 year but I was terminated 6 months later without pay, can I sue?

I was not paid for the remainder of the year.

An oral agreement ("oral" is the correct term) like the one you describe is not binding on an employer and will not stop the employer from terminating you, or make you other than an employee at will. For an employment agreement to be enforceable in terms of preventing or restricting termination, it must be in writing.
