No, your employer does not have to pay if they ask you to leave before the 3 months is up. An employer need only pay a worker for time actualy worked. In other words, it is not required to return the courtesy. The fact is that most employment  arrangements are ",at will" so a company can set the conditions of work much as it sees fit. This includes whether or not to honor a 3 month (or any) notice. This of course all presumes that there exists is no union agreement or employment contract to the contrary. Also, such action must not constitute some form of legally actionble discrimnation.
