What to do if a landlord claims they don’t need to produce a written inspection stating home is habitable?
Said they just “tell us”. Is that true?

If your landlord refuses to provide you with documentation stating that the rentla is habitable despite requests for you for such information, your recourse is as follows:
1. write the landlord a note requesting such information by a certain date and if not received, you will contact the local health and building permit and inspection departments for an inspection of the unit. Keep a copy of the letter for future use and need.
2. if the due date comes and goes, then contact a representative for each of the two above departments and request an inspection. If the unit is not habitable, it will be red tagged.
