What is an estate search?

My mom passed with no Will and no estate We had a joint account, etc. so nothing had to be probated. I cancelled her credit card and explained that there was no estate. They said they were going to file with the courts to do an estate search. What does that exaclty mean?

I am so sorry for your loss.  The credit card company will probably do an asset search and/or do a search in the probate court for an estate proceeding.  As long as you were not a joint account holder for the credit card then you should be fine.  Good luck.
