When hiring employees or applying for a job, it’s important to understand the laws in place to protect employees and prospective employees from discrimination and other unlawful treatment. For example, laws like Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act forbid discrimination on the basis of race, gender, religion, national origin, age or any other protected status, in the hiring process. Employment law also precludes certain types of questions from being asked during the hiring process, such as questions about the number of children a candidate has or plans to have.
