The homestead exemption is different in every state. You need to find out if in your state a) whether there is a homestead exemption available to you, b) if it covers chattle property or property covered under mostly the UCC (Article 9) filing and c) if it is capped at a certain limit or limitless. Further, you also get a wildcard and depending on what it is, you might be able to use the wildcard for your home. If you don't have bankruptcy counsel, contact the trustee and see if you can talk about the assets you have and what can be best used herein. If you are worried about the trustee, try talking to legal aid. Sometimes they have brochures and access to resources to help consumers.
