i want to start a clothing company in the US called ‘Illusion Co’ but there’s
already a clothing company that is UK based called ‘Illusion Attire’

would this be copyright infringement or open me to legal trouble down the line?

The issue is not whether the company is foreign, but whether they do business in the U.S. Each nation's copyright law only applies within its borders--within the area over which its courts have juridiction or power. The UK company does not do business in the U.S. but you do, there would be no issue.
