My son is being charged with theft from a motor vehicle and they say they have only his pinky print.

Yes--a single fingerprint can be enough to show that someone was the thief. For example:say the car did not belong to a friend or family member of his, so there is no innoecent reason why his pinky print would be in it. The car was stolen, and when recovered, had his print: under those circumstances, the presence of his print in the car is strong evidence he is the one who stole it.
