It's not so much that they can hurt you, because you wouldn't be asking this question if they didn't have enough evidence to put you in jail.  They can hurt you.  If you cooperate with them, they can go easy, have the prosecutor give you a break;  you can sometimes be allowed to plead guilty to a lesser offense, or at least have a lower sentence recommended.
