Under the laws of all states in this country an employer can terminate an employee for any resson so long as the reason is not based upon discrimination of a protected class under the law such as age, gender, religion, sexual orientation and the like.
Terminating an employee upon return from maternity leave could be seen as discrimination based upon gender.
