Can I put a time frame on how long my personal check can be cashed?

Our landlord told us that our rent check from 6 months ago was never cashed and I was wondering if I can put a time frame on my check where he either has to take a loss on that months rent or we have to write him another check.

No, you may not do this. Rather, a landlord may seek recovery of unpaid rent any time within the relevant "statute of limitions"--or time to take legal action. If you have an oral lease, I believe that is four years in your state; if you have a written lease, I believe the landlord has up to six years to take action.
