Can I make payments on a collection notice?

I bought a home last year and left a month on an apartment lease. They turned it over to collections and are now sending me a notice for $1500 in rent and fees. Can I legally make payments to satisfy this debt to the collection company or can I negotiate directly to wtih the apartment complex?

Good question. The best way to resolve the situation that you are in is to negotiate directly with the former landlord over the amount of money that he or she will agree to accept from you regarding the $1,500.00 you have written about and whether monthly installments would be accepted.

Assuming you reach an agreement, have a written agreement drawn up and signed by you, the former landord and the third party collection company's representative with specific reference as to whom payments are to be made. Keep a copy of the written agreement for future need.
