Can I have my security deposit returned if I didn’t move into an apartment?

I’ve signed lease for apartment, paid 1 month rent security deposit and rent for period of 4 days prorated to move in on 28th of July this year. Just days before moving in I lost my job and figured that I cannot afford to pay the rent. Imediately went to leasing office, told situation and canceled lease. I’ve been told that I can not get my security deposit back, even I will be hold responsible for the rent until they rent apartment out. Is that right since I never moved in the apartment, as matter of fact, never even get apartment keys.

If you signed the lease for the rental of the unit you are not moving into and placed a security deposit for it, you are obligated under the lease but are entitled to the return of your security deposit as soon as you advise the property owner of the unit that you were not to move in.
