Can I get fired for a complaint that wasn’t about me when I wasn’t clocked in?

I was not clocked in, an employee gave the customer attitude and did not want to ring her up. As manager, I called someone over to ring her up and sent the other employee home. Since I was not clocked in I could not ring her up. She complained to corporate and I was fired for the incident even though I was clocked out.

Unless your termination violates the terms of an employment contract or union agreement, as an "at will" worker you could have been fired for any reason or no reason at all, with or without notice. Basically, in most employment relationships, a company can set the conditions of the workplace much as it sees fit (absent some form of legally actionable discrimination).
