It's quite possible that you qualify for a public defender or court-appointed counsel, and by all means do whatever you can to get the representation.

There has to be a bit more to this story, and the bit more might well be very important.  If you were the innocent dupe of someone who wrote a bad check, you should be able to get the charges dismissed or win acquittal at trial.  However, if it looks like you were working with the person who wrote the check, you could be convicted along with that person.
