Can I be fired for telling my boss that he has to get his practice up to code?

This happened 5 months ago. I was hired in at a veterinary office after compleating an internship which lasted 3 months. I was on the payroll for about another 3 months. The practice is a mess, and I was tring my best to get things in order. The day I was fired, I confronted him about his expired supplies and medications. I felt as tho I could get in trouble, being a technician, for looking the other way on all these violations. He fired me, as well as taunting/insulting me as I left. I wasn’t elgible for unemployment because I didn’t work long enough. I did report him though.

Under the laws of all states in this country, unless one has a written contract setting forth the time period of employment one can be terminated "at the will" of the employer as in your situation. However, the termination is subject to certain rules prohibiting discrimination in the workplace based upon gender, race, ethnicity and the like.

In your situation, you might want to contact your local labor department about the reasons why your were terminated where you brought up issues concerning expired medications. I would also revisit the issue of unemployment benefits as well. If you were fired, you should be entitled to unemployment benefits depending upon the length of time you were working at the veterinary office.
