Can an employer cut your hours whenever they want?
My moms employer cut her hours down
to 30 a week after they made her an
offer to buy her house and she
declined. Is that legal? They want
her property and I think they are
trying to get her to lose her home,
so they can buy it. They even
offered to buy it and rent to her.

Yes, it is legal--unfair and morally wrong, but legal--unless your mother has a written employment contract guarantying or locking in her hours. Otherwise, without such a contract, she is an employee at will, and an employee at will may have her hours reduced (or be fired) at any time, for any reason--including that the employer wants to pressue her to sell her house.
