As a tenant, you are under a legal obligation to pay your rent when due. At such time as you are in default of that obligation (even if by just a day), civil action can be commenced by your landlord. So once you missed the timeframe in which to pay your rent, your landlord had the right to start the eviction process. This would first be done by giving you notice to vacate and then if you remain after the date specificed in the notice, then for your landlord to file for an "unlawful detainer" (i.e. eviction lawsuit) in court.
