If I’m missing a work day to do on-site training to benefit the business, is my employer required to pay for my missed time due to this business trip?

Yes, this is work IF the employer sends you on the trip i.e. the employer told you to go anything the employer instructs or require you to do is work, and hence the time spent doing it is work time for which you should be compensated. On the other hand, if the seller is allowing you go to take time from work but is not requiring it--rather, it was your idea, because you think the extra training makes you more valuable--then it is not work time training to benefit you or improve your skills, even if it also benefits the employer, is not work and not work time if not required by the employer.
