If you buy her a car but she is still legally married, even if separated, then if they divorce at some point, it will be an asset of hers that is considered and potentially distributed or its value divided in the divorce. Buy yourself a car; let her use it, but keep title in your name; make sure you list her as an authorized driver on your insurance, however, so that you and she are covered when she drives.
