are we responsible for a open permit that the previous owner pulled?

We bought our home 4/14 and 2 years
later we received a letter from to town
building inspector that a final
inspection was not done on a permit
pulled by previous owner. I am
concerned that if they inspect it and
find issues and work was not done
properly that we will be responsible.
But if our lawyer, realtor, inspector
and tiltle searcher did not know this
and our the town did not follow up on
work permit are we still responsible?
And what is our rights?

Unfortunately, the current homeowner is responsible for ensuring that all work was permitted and everything is in compliance with code--even though the work was done or begun by a previous owner. It doesn't matter if you had no warning or knowledge and did everything right--you still have to pay whatever it takes to come into compliance.
