Insurance Question from Cleveland, AL

Asked on 09/20/2012

Wreck w/suspended license I had a ticket I forgot about and received a notice that said IF i didn't pay they would suspend my license so i went the next day and paid the ticket. Here we are 5 months later and I went to pick up a loaner car for my boyfriend whom I live with and I had a wreck. I was informed by the police officer that my license was suspended! I swore the paper i had received 5 months earlier had said IF i didn't pay the fines they WOULD BE not that they had been. Hours after the accident I went to the DMV and reinstated my license but my question is will my boyfriends auto policy still pay for the damages

When there is an auto accident the insurance follows the car. So, your boyfriend’s insurance policy is responsible for the damages to the other car. You are covered as a driver of his car unless there is a special provision that requires the driver be listed on the policy. The insurance company may ask to exclude you as a driver in the future, or to add you as a rated driver on the policy. This would mean that your driving record could affect your boyfriend’s insurance costs. Since you have corrected the situation of the suspended license you should be able to move forward if the insurance company wants to add you to the policy. However, if the ticket that was involved was a moving violation it would cost your boyfriend in the premiums charged. If you have your own car and insurance, then your boyfriend’s insurance would not be affected, but the insurance company could still as to exclude you as a driver.
