Company History: Sutter Insurance Company was founded in California in 1975. Sutter provides commercial and personal insurance products but commercial lines are emphasized and constitute the largest part of its business. Commercial lines include commercial auto (stand-alone physical damage for California vehicles such as light pick-up trucks to tractor-trailers and fleets of public livery vehicles) and auto warranty, business auto (liability and physical damage coverages for light and medium –up to 20,000 GVW– vehicles, especially service type vehicles as well as regional long haul trucking coverages for trucks operating in 11 western states. Personal lines include homeowner’s coverages for non-standard buildings or owners whose coverage has been dropped by other carriers.
Principle Sales Methods: Sales are through brokers. More than 85% of Sutters’ premiums come from California and over 70% of its business is derived from commercial lines.
Auto Business: Sutter provides a variety of insurance programs including: the heavy truck liability program, commercial auto physical damage, motor truck cargo, business auto and public auto. Commercial auto liability makes up 41.5% of their direct premiums while auto warranty makes up 32.3%.
Homeowners Business: Personal lines include: Homeowners HO-3, Homeowners HO-8, Dwelling Fire DP-1, Comprehensive personal liability, and inland marine. These insurances collectively comprise 26.2% of the direct premiums.
