Company History: Founded in 1945 by Henry J. Kaiser and Sidney Garfield, the company originated as a 12-bed hospital in the Mojave desert. Modern Kaiser Permanente was born in 1952 when the name of the established Health Plan and Hospitals were changed from Permanente to Kaiser and the medical group chose to keep the Permanente name. Today, it is a nonprofit public-benefit corporation with contracts for individuals and groups to arrange comprehensive medical and hospital services and operates full-service hospitals nationwide. The three entities which make up Kaiser Permanente include: the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, and the Permanente Medical Groups. Kaiser Permanente remains a working partnership between two organizations: the Permanente Medical Groups and the not-for-profit Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals. Now Kaiser Health Plan Inc serves over 9.3 million people and offers both hospital and physician care. In 2013, Kaiser had 38 hospitals, 618 medical offices, 17,425 physicians, 48,285 nurses, and 174,415 employees.
