Insurance Question from Cazenovia, NY

Asked on 07/25/2012

Is our trailer and equipment covered under our auto insurance when attached to our parked truck during a hit-and-run incident? Our truck was sitting in our driveway yesterday with trailer attached, lawnmower on top of trailer. A semi came down our road, ripped down the power lines over the road, pulling the 100 amp cable off our building and out of the box. As he continued to drive away, the cable wrapped around our trailer and lawnmower, splintering one side of our trailer, and destroying the front half of our mower. The driver never stopped. Can we claim the damages to our equipment under our auto insurance?

In auto insurance, trailers are automatically insured for liability coverage when being towed by an insured vehicle. In this case, the vehicle and trailer were parked. The truck damage, if there was some, is covered by your automobile insurance policy. In the case of the trailer, you need to have specific insurance on the trailer for it to be covered for damages. Some insurance companies will add the trailer to your insurance policy and some write a separate policy for the trailer. You should check with your insurance agent to see if you purchased insurance coverage on the trailer specifically. If there is no specific insurance on the trailer, then you would not have coverage.Hopefully you have reported the incident to the police. It would seem there would be some damage to the truck that caused the accident and they may be able to find the driver and charge him with a hit and run accident. You could then go after his insurance company for your damages.
