Renters insurance covers your personal property as well as your child’s in the apartment or home that you are renting. The cost of the policy is based on the amount of insurance that you select as well as the liability limit you select plus the deductible. Your personal property is insured for specified perils such as fire, theft, lightning, smoke, vandalism and malicious mischief, certain types of water damage (excluding flood) and vehicle damage. The liability protection protects you in case someone is injured by your negligent act, such as a loose railing or slick floor, or his or her property is damaged due to your negligence. The liability coverage is worldwide, not just at your residence. For example, if you poke someone in the eye with an umbrella while walking down the street, you would be covered by your liability insurance.

When buying renters insurance, be sure to discuss replacement cost coverage for your personal property with your agent. By including replacement cost, any covered loss will replace the lost or damaged items on a “new for old” basis meaning no depreciation will be taken on the item(s) as long as you actually replace them. This extra protection does cost a little more, but it is well worth it, by allowing you enough money to actually replace your lost items.

Case Studies: Renters Insurance Coverage

Case Study 1: Theft Protection

Sarah, a single parent, returned home after a long day at work to find her apartment had been burglarized. Her valuable electronics, jewelry, and other personal belongings were stolen. Fortunately, Sarah had renters insurance. She filed a claim with her insurance company and was able to receive reimbursement for the stolen items, allowing her to replace them without bearing the financial burden alone.

Case Study 2: Liability Coverage

John, a renter, was hosting a dinner party at his apartment. One of his guests accidentally slipped on a wet floor, resulting in a serious injury. The guest required medical treatment and decided to hold John responsible for the medical expenses. Thankfully, John had renters insurance with liability coverage. His insurance company handled the claim, covering the guest’s medical bills and legal expenses, protecting John from significant financial loss.

Case Study 3: Worldwide Coverage

Emily, a renter who frequently travels, accidentally damaged another person’s property while on vacation. She accidentally knocked over an expensive vase at a friend’s house. Emily was worried about the cost of replacing the vase, but she remembered that her renters insurance provided liability coverage worldwide. She contacted her insurance company, and they covered the cost of the damaged property, saving her from a costly out-of-pocket expense.
