Insurance Question from Charlotte, NC

Asked on 02/27/2012

I had an insured moped stolen last month and am waiting on insurance claim to pay out but my question is this…. If I get another moped/scooter and it gets stolen within a few months...are they going to honor my claim or not? I obviously don't plan on another one getting stolen but my apt complex isnt that great so I dont want to even get another cycle if I can't have it properly insured.

If you have a credible claim for the theft of your moped, the insurance company will honor the claim, even if a similar claim happened before. However, a pattern of thefts will make the insurance company to reconsider you as a risk, and they could decide not to continue your insurance at the renewal date.If you are in an area where thefts are common, maybe you could take some extra measures to prevent a theft. Alarms are available on motorcycles, so probably on mopeds too. You could also buy a chain to discourage thefts, or park the moped in an area not as visible. You could also disable the moped by removing the battery.Talk to your agent to see if they have any advice on this situation. Hopefully, you won’t have another claim any time soon, but that is what insurance is for, to protect you from a monetary loss for such events.
