Insurance Question from Cayce, SC

Asked on 06/23/2016

How far back can a moving violation be used against you to make auto insurance higher 2 moving violations in Rochester ny in 2007 and 1 they say at fault but should really be not at fault in 2013 in south carolina. I can go to DMV and fix that.

Answer given on June 26, 2016

Each auto insurance company has its own way of rating auto policies based on driving records. Also, the type of violation can affect the length of time a ticket can be charged. If there is a major violation, such as DUI, that will apply much longer than a speeding ticket, or red light violation. In addition, insurance companies may go back further to review a record if you are just applying for insurance versus renewing your policy with them. You also indicate “at fault” which is usually what is referred to in an auto accident. Again, the time frame of charging for an accident can vary if there is bodily injury involved in the accident. If you feel something can be adjusted with DMV, you should go ahead and correct any mistakes you think are on your record. It is not simple to do it, but if you have the correct paperwork you can get a ticket or accident removed.
