How can I find affordable automobile insurance after a past DWI? My liscense was suspended for 1 year after a DWI conviction. My record was clean for 35 years prior to that. How do I obtain affordable automobile insurance in North Carolina?

Having had a DWI within 3 years makes it very difficult and expensive to obtain insurance when your license is reinstated. Unfortunately, the prior driving record does not have much effect on the insurance companies when a major violation is so recent. Most states require insurance companies to file rates and rules for auto insurance. In those filings the insurance companies indicate how they will handle a driver with a major violation and/or suspension of the license. The majority will not write a new policy for a driver with a major violation. There are insurance companies that specialize in drivers with DWI and similar tickets. Their rates indicate the exposure for such drivers, but it get insurance coverage for you so you can start to get back on your feet. You should consider having a less expensive car so you can have only liability insurance to start to keep the costs of the insurance down. If you must have physical damage coverage, choose higher deductibles to keep the costs down. As the ticket gets older you will find rates will slowly go down and after 5 or so years you will be able to find insurancein the standard market.
