Insurance Question from Cleveland, OH

Asked on 07/05/2012

Had accident I want to switch my car insurance lower rate can I get my car fixed later.? I had a car accident and need 1500 to fix my car. I don't have the money right now but my current car insurance charges me 350.00 a month. I just received a quote for 140.00 from another company. If I switch can I still get my car fixed under my old insurance how does this work.

Since you were insured with your current insurance company at the time of the loss, then they should finalize the claim with you and make whatever payment is determined for your insurance. You can go ahead and move your insurance to the new insurance company as long as the date is after the date of the accident. However, the new insurance company may not be willing to provide comprehensive or collision coverage on your car until the current damages are repaired. Make sure you advise the new company that your car has existing damage. They may want to inspect the car and take photos.if you only have liability insurance on the car, and no physical damage, you still need to advise the new company of the existing damage to your car. Again,t hey may want to inspect it, since they want to be sure it is safe to drive. If there are any safety issues that are unrepaired, you may have to fix them before they will write your insurance. Also, make sure the quote youhave from the new insurance company includes the fact of your recent accident. If the accident was not your fault, it will not affect your rates, however, if it was your fault, your rates will be affected.
