Usually if a Certificate of Insurance is provided to a separate entity or person, a copy of the certificate is sent to the policyholder so they are made aware that the certificate was issued. Often times the certificate names the holder as an additional insured, which can affect the insurance policy, so the policyholder should be made aware of the situation.  Some insurance companies will require the policyholder to request the certificate of insurance, dependin upon the reason for the certificate. Each insurance company has their own procedure for this type of transaction.

If a certificate was issued on your behalf to another person or entity and you were not notified at the time, you should call your agent or insurance company to inquire about the certificate and why it was issued.  As the policyholder you should have the right to know about this activity on your policy.
