Insurance Question from East Hartford, CT

Asked on 09/14/2012

Can they cancel my insurance while it under repair on a major claim Insurance company doesn't want to renew my policy but the house is under repair van they do that

Answer given on September 18, 2012

If you suffered a homeowner loss and the insurance company is cooperating in the ssettlement of the claim, they can still set the policy up for non-renewal if they so choose. However, they do have to complete the settlement of the loss and pay all money as agreed upon for the loss, even if the time goes past the cancellation date. Since the loss was while the policy was in force, they must complete that claim. You should contact your agent or insurance company and see if there is anything you can do that would cause them to remove the non-renewal. If this is not your first loss, then you are probably being cancelled due to multiple losses. In any event it will be difficult for you to find affordable replacement insurance if you are non-renewed. You should start searching for a new company quickly if your current company will not withdraw the non-renewal.
