Can I receive a refund when my insurance provider cancels my home owners coverage? Our coverage is being canceled because of drought conditions where we live. We live in the mountains and have gone through drought conditions the last two years. We understand this is a high risk area however, it seems like we're getting penalized in two ways, one we've paid for insurance and never had a claim against our home owners policy, and two, we were never contacted to prior to receiving the cancellation letter about preventative measures we have in place in case of a fire.

A homeowner insurance company cannot cancel a policy during the policy term, unless there has been fraud committed in obtaining the insurance. If your insurance company wants to cancel your policy due to conditions in the area, they can only non-renew the insurance as of the renewal date.If your company is trying to cancel you during the term, call your insurance agent and ask them for an explanation. If they cannot, or will not tell you the details, then you need to call the insurance company directly. Speak to someone who can explain the situation to you. It may be that the insurance company has set your policy for non renewal. They must give you a notice of this decision. The time frame varies by state, but it is usually 60 days. Review the notice that you received to be sure you fully understand it. If you still have questions, call your agent or insurance company.
