Insurance Question from Albuquerque, NM
Asked on 06/20/2013
Body shop and available parts Someone backed into my pristine 2005 Saab 9-5 Aero and damaged the front bumper beyond repair. I went thru her insurance, found a body shop I like and started the process 2 months ago. The body shop made me wait a month till all the parts where in. Dropped the car off and now a month later...no parts. It appears there are no new bumpers for this car and the only option is to find one from a wreck which could be another two months of waiting. The car is pristine. What are my options here? Is there a limit as to how long I am supposed to wait for parts? Do I have to settle for used parts?

If your car was backed into by someone and their insurance company is agreeing to pay for the repairs, but new parts are not available, the insurance company can’t change the fact. Even though your car was in pristine condition, the parts on it are from 2005, so they are not brand new either. The repair shop sounds like they have tried to find the new parts, but they are simply unavailable. You need to be more understanding of the situation.Often times there are after market parts available on cars. They are not made by the cars manufacturer, but by a different company. Most times these parts are as good as the original parts. If that option is not available, or unacceptable to you then used parts are the only answer. The time frame is also out of the hands of the repair shop, as they can only get the parts as they are available.
