Final Verdict: Review of Allstate

Allstate remains one of the most popular choices for auto insurance in America, in large part due to its excellent coverage and discount options. However, Allstate auto insurance rates are higher than average, and it has low customer service ratings.

What You Should Know About Allstate

[su_box title="What You Should Know" style="default”]
  • Allstate is one of the largest insurance companies in the country, with its popularity in part because of its ample insurance options
  • Allstate auto insurance rates are often the most expensive compared to similarly-sized companies
  • Despite being a popular choice, Allstate has a lot of negative customer reviews focused on a slow claims process and bad customer service experiences
[/su_box] When it comes to auto insurance, Allstate Insurance is one of the most recognizable names on the market. With a long list of car insurance options and discounts, it’s easy to see why so many drivers turn to Allstate. However, Allstate’s average rates tend to be higher than other companies. Additionally, the company struggles with negative customer reviews and poor ratings. In fact, Allstate is ranked the worst insurance company in America. However, many customers remain loyal to their Allstate policies, in part due to the company’s unique insurance options. Comparing quotes with multiple companies is integral before signing up for a new policy, or you might be overpaying for your insurance. Read through this Allstate auto insurance review to see if it might be right for you. Then, compare your car insurance options to find the best policy possible.

Allstate Insurance Coverage Options

There are two main types of auto insurance policies – minimum and full coverage. The best policy for you depends on your needs, but Allstate offers everything you need for both. [quote_expert_blockquote style="4" headshot="https://staging.freeadvice.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/jeffrey-manola.png" name="Jeffrey Manola" title="Licensed Insurance Agent" quote="Minimum insurance is the least coverage you can purchase in your state and still legally drive. It’s your cheapest option for coverage, but it doesn’t cover your car. A full coverage policy is often the better choice for most drivers but comes with higher rates. An Allstate representative can help you determine which policy is best for you." /] When you shop at Allstate, you can choose from the following types of standard insurance:
  • Liability: Liability insurance is the most commonly required type of coverage by state law. It ensures you can pay for injuries and damage you cause in an at-fault accident.
  • Collision: Since liability insurance never covers your vehicle, you’ll need collision coverage for your own car repairs. It covers accidents with other drivers and collisions with stationary objects.
  • Comprehensive: There’s a lot more than car accidents that can damage your vehicle. Comprehensive insurance covers damage from things like animals, weather, fires, vandalism, and theft.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: Although most drivers must carry insurance, it doesn’t mean everyone does. Uninsured motorist insurance pays for your medical bill and car repairs if you’re hit by a driver without the proper coverage.
  • Personal injury protection: Personal injury protection (PIP) insurance covers health care and related expenses for you and your passengers after an accident, no matter who was at fault.
  • Medical payments: Medical payments (MedPay) insurance is offered in states that don’t have PIP. It works similarly to PIP insurance but doesn’t offer identical coverage.
Many drivers find the coverage listed above is good enough for their vehicle. However, Allstate offers a variety of add-ons if you want to customize your policy with extra coverage. Learn more about its insurance options in our Allstate insurance review.

Allstate Auto Insurance Add-Ons

Auto insurance add-ons offer special coverage not found in a standard policy. They won’t appeal to every driver, but they fill in specific gaps that can be useful to certain people. While some companies only offer a few add-ons, Allstate has a fairly impressive selection. Allstate auto insurance add-ons include:
  • Rideshare: While companies like Uber and Lyft offer coverage to their drivers, they don’t usually cover everything. Allstate rideshare insurance fills those gaps to protect you better while working.
  • Gap: Gap insurance protects you against an underwater loan if you total your car, so you don’t have to pay for a vehicle you no longer drive.
  • Roadside assistance: Purchase this add-on if you want Allstate to rescue you when you have a flat tire, dead battery, empty gas tank, need a tow, or lock yourself out of your car.
  • New car replacement: Available for cars two years old or younger, Allstate will replace your car with the same model year in case you total your vehicle.
  • Rental reimbursement: Allstate pays for your rental car if your vehicle is stuck in the mechanic for repairs after a covered incident.
  • Vanishing deductible: Every year you don’t file a claim, Allstate reduces your deductible by $100. You can stack this up to five times for a total of $500.
  • Umbrella: You can increase the liability coverage of your car insurance policy with this add-on.
  • Mexico auto insurance: You’ll need a separate car insurance policy if you plan on driving your vehicle in Mexico. Allstate can set you up a temporary or permanent Mexican add-on, depending on your needs.
Allstate auto insurance quotes are generally higher than other companies, but many customers say the prices are worth it because of Allstate’s excellent insurance options. [quote_expert_blockquote style="4" headshot="https://staging.freeadvice.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/37cb002e-tracey-wells.jpg" name="Tracey L. Wells" title="Licensed Insurance Agent & Agency Owner" quote="Most Allstate auto insurance add-ons can only be added to an existing policy, but there are three options for Allstate roadside assistance. You can add it to your policy, buy a standalone Allstate roadside assistance plan, or call for a one-time rescue." /] You should keep in mind how much insurance coverage you need before signing up for add-ons. While extra coverage is never a bad idea, adding extra insurance to your policy can quickly increase your monthly premiums.

Allstate Drivewise

Drivewise is Allstate’s telematics auto insurance program that helps safe drivers save. Allstate offers one of the highest discounts of any company, advertising that safe drivers can save up to 40%. You can enroll in Drivewise through the Allstate auto insurance mobile app. Drivewise tracks your driving behaviors, like hard braking, rapid acceleration, overall speed, and what time of day you drive. The more consistent you are in your safe habits, the more you’ll save. [quote_expert_blockquote style="4" headshot="https://staging.freeadvice.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Kristen-G..png" name="Kristen Gryglik" title="Licensed Insurance Agent" quote="Although Allstate advertises a maximum savings of 40%, most customers report a 35% discount. The maximum discount only applies to safe drivers, however — if you don’t practice safe habits or have to drive during high-risk hours, you won’t get as much from Drivewise." /] Drivewise offers other unique features besides a discount. For example, Drivewise comes with crash detection. The app will send you options to contact emergency services, roadside assistance, or start a claim when it detects a collision.

Allstate Milewise

Milewise is a pay-per-mile auto insurance program Allstate offers for low-mileage drivers. Rather than paying a flat monthly rate for your insurance, your premium is calculated by how much you drive. Your monthly rate is comprised of two parts. The first is a flat daily rate you’ll pay no matter how much you drive. The second part is how much you’ll pay per mile. Added together, these rates make up how much you pay per month. For example, if your flat daily rate is $1.50, your per-mile rate is $.05, and you drive 20 miles daily, you’ll pay $2.50 per day for insurance. A 30-day month comes out to $75. Milewise is a great option for low-mileage drivers, but not worth it even if you put an average number of miles on your car.

  • Premier and Premier Plus: The Premier discount is available to drivers who go three years without making a claim, while Premier Plus is for people who make it at least five years claims-free.

Allstate Denied Responsibility-Customer Backed Into Us

In June 2024, our vehicle was proceeding through a parking lot when a pickup truck backed out into the back passenger side. It happened so quickly, my husband had no time to notice - let alone react. Rather than accept full liability for their customer's negligence, Allstate opted to take 80% liability and hold us responsible for the other 20%. They had no police report - police refused to come out. Neither vehicle had a dash cam, and witnesses weren't available. Since we couldn't provide either, they decided to go the cheap route. The repairs were $6,000, and they begrudged 20% because they could. There's not enough policing of insurance company practices. We now have a dashcam since it's clear that unscrupulous companies like Allstate are more concerned with keeping their bonuses and profits than making customers 'whole' again. Google this company, check the BBB, and you will see Allstate regularly denies valid claims. The behavior continues unchecked.

Always lose arbitrations

I had gotten backed into. Have audio of it. Have video of her driving away with her damage and license. Have him on audio with his phone # and saying her name threatening if we call it into insurance. Allstate still lost the case and I'm out a deductible! In the 90's taxi ran stop sign police report said looked exactly like what happened and Allstate still lost that one too!!! Bye bye Allstate!

PLEASE DO NOT SUBJECT YOURSELF TO THIS HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE. I wish I had come to this site before made the HUGE mistake of switching my auto insurance and bundling it with Allstate. They were fine as my homeowner\'s plan. I switched my auto coverage in August trying to reduce my auto insurance due to the increase with my previous plan to save money. I paid my policy in full, was mistake #1, In October my Allstate coverage increased by 89.00, I called to get an explanation, to call this a customer service department would be a LIE! There was NO customer services at all, in fact speaking with Juan and Pat was like speaking with a child who had yet to learn how to comprehend, think or articulate. They simply read the document I had in hand to me as if I couldn\'t read even though I told them I have it, but it doesn\'t give an explanation of why the increase took place. The only response I received from either of them was insults Pat told me I could cancel my coverage as if she didn\'t care, Juan told me nothing. I am so disheartened cause I will need to start looking for other coverage and it seems like the staff these establishments are hiring are inept and inadequate they aren\'t able to function. They won\'t let you speak with a supervisor, one rattled paper in the phone to get me off of the phone. They ar enasty and purposely unhelpful, I wrote Allstste on line and never received a response from their customer service.

My wife worked at one of Allstate's satellite offices. I proposed to her over the weekend. On Monday, her boss fired her after showing her ring off to a coworker. He took her into his office and explained she was being fired because he "believed in the Bible." My wife and I called Allstate HR at the corporate office and told them what had happened and they told us that because my wife worked at a satellite office, which were owned and run by individual people, those satellite offices could be run however they wanted and none of AllStates corporate protections applied. They basically said 'too bad so sad.' A little while later, before we'd had a chance to switch insurance companies yet (a long and tedious process) I got into a car accident. The other driver ran a red light, hitting me and I was sent to the hospital. I'm a transgender man and was literally about to change my legal name within a few days. I called Allstate to file the claim and asked that they use my new legal name. They said they couldn't because it wouldn't be official for a few days. I said 'fine, I'll call back in a few days." They then threatened me and told me if I didn't file "RIGHT NOW" they wouldn't take care of my claim. I was then forced to give my statement while being deadnamed and misgendered the entire time. Believe it or not this story it gets worse. So months go by. MONTHS. The insurance that was paying for a rental car runs out. I still have no reimebursment so I cannot buy a new car (mine was totaled.) I'm bein harassed by the bank over my car note, which obviously I wasn't paying since my car was totaled and Allstate was SUPPOSED to reimburse me for nearly everything. I had excellent coverage and excellent credit. I'm in constant contact with them. E-mails, phone calls, more e-mail, more phone calls. Every. Single. Day. And they will not give me the money. Excuse after excuse, and I'm deadnamed and misgendered every single time. Even though now my legal name has changed, they insisted on putting my dead name and wrong gender on the original report. So now people are VERY confused when they talk to me, hearing my deep masculine voice and seeing my pretty feminine name on paper. THANKS ALLSTATE! I was humiliated, endlessly, every day for over NINE MONTHS. Meanwhile, my wife is driving me to and from work because the insurance covering the rental car ran out months ago. My credit is being destroyed because I have no insurance money to buy a new car or pay the bank for the old car fee with, and I'm still recovering physically from the crash. I end up getting a lawyer and I told them "give me my money you've owed me for over 9 months now by tomorrow or I'm suing you." Magically, the next day, all the money was released. Allstate put me through a [REDACTED WORD] I cannot describe properly on this complaint. I never imagined in all my life how much hardship and hurt an insurance company could truly cause. Stay away. Far FAR away.

Way overpriced! Will scam you if you cancel!

After shopping around I found a policy that was 1/3 the cost (Literally 1/3 the cost) and cancelled. After canceling I was charged 30% of the yearly fee after only having insurance for 13 days. Total scam hidden in the fine print.

Too many insurance companies out there to pay for crap experiences like this, go someplace else.
