Insurance Question from Kewadin, MI

Asked on 11/30/2011

AAA is my ins co. there was a storm that caused much damage to my home. AAA subcontracted the claim to outside adjusting co. Its been 3 months . And nothing has been done. AAA estimate is approximately 20,000 less than two other independent contractors estimates were. At this point in time I don't think they (AAA) are acting in good faith. Do I hire a private adjuster? Do I contact the Michigan Insurance Commision?

Answer given on December 02, 2011

I would not call a private adjuster just yet.  That will cost you.  Three months is too long.  AAA should now reassign that to another independent adjuster since the first adjuster can not get the job done in a timely manner.  Call AAA and ask for the supervisor in claims. Ask that they reassign your claim.  Advise them your next step is to file a complaint with the Michigan Dept of Insurance   . If they do not respond in a day or two with a contact name for a new independent adjuster, I would file the complaint. Make sure you send a copy to the AAA. Make sure you mention in the letter that you feel that they are delaying your claim in bad faith.  Even though it is a storm related claim, it should not take 3 months for an adjuster to contact you.

I feel this will get you the action you need.  However, if you still do not get any movement on your claim, you can always speak with an attorney concerning contacting the insurance company. Some will write a letter for a nominal fee (much cheaper than the public adjuster).
