Is there any way around not paying a parking ticket?
I used an expired permit on a college campus
that makes it clear that you need a valid permit

No, if "its all correct" you have to pay it; the only times you don't have to pay a parking ticket is when you can show some error which fundamentally invalidates it or casts real doubt on whether it is warranted, such as they don't have the right license plate or description of your car, or if you can prove in court facts showing they issued it incorrectly (e.g. prove with a parking receipt from elsewhere for the same time/date that you could not have been parked where they say you were, when they say you were).
